Why Close Diablo Canyon?

  • Diablo Canyon sits on the Central Coast, near numerous active earthquake faults in an historic tsunami zone. It is at risk for a Fukushima-like earthquake, tsunami, and meltdown disaster.

  • Since Diablo Canyon opened in the mid-1980s, San Luis Obispo County has changed from a low-cancer county to a high-cancer county.

  • State health data show that normal radiation releases from Diablo Canyon are sickening and killing residents in the surrounding area, especially infants and children.

  • Diablo Canyon’s Once-Through-Cooling system damages the ocean ecosystem by taking in some 2.5 billion gallons of seawater daily and discharging it back into the ocean 18° F warmer, thereby killing over a billion fish larvae and other marine species annually.

  • In the 2013-2014 Transmission Report, the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) determined that Diablo Canyon is not a “must run”  facility needed to maintain grid support and reliability.

  • Diablo Canyon’s 2,200 MW of electricity can be replaced by economically competitive renewable sources of energy, which will generate thousands of high-quality jobs.

The Undersigned support the immediate closure of the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant.
